Malaysia strengthens ASEAN green leadership with IGEM 2025 and KLSS

Malaysia strengthens ASEAN green leadership with IGEM 2025 and KLSS

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is strengthening ASEAN’s collective climate ambition by placing sustainability and climate action at the core of its regional agenda as the ASEAN chair in 2025. Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said Malaysia’s leadership through the Kuala Lumpur Sustainability Summit and the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia reflects the nation’s commitment to driving change in the region. “Through KLSS, Malaysia has strengthened ASEAN’s climate discourse, aligning our region around three key priorities: adaptation, mitigation, and resilience.” “Meanwhile, through the IGEM, we move from policy to opportunity, turning discussions into partnerships and partnerships into projects.” “IGEM showcases technologies that will shape the next generation of industries, from clean energy and sustainable mobility to waste reduction, carbon management, and nature-based solutions,” he said in a statement today. Johari, who is also the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, said that the IGEM serves as a platform for inclusion, and it is not limited to large corporations but also acts as a launchpad for micro, small and medium enterprises, which are the backbone of Malaysia’s economy and central to its green transformation. Johari added that the government is finalising the National Carbon Market Policy to define Malaysia’s approach to carbon trading and guide the use of carbon pricing to drive investment, innovation and low-carbon growth. He said the policy will promote carbon credit projects in forestry, renewable energy and nature-based solutions that will create new income opportunities for state governments, local communities and private investors. Johari added that the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Bill passed earlier this year positions Malaysia as a regional hub for carbon management, a sector that could unlock up to 250 billion US dollars in potential economic value over the next three decades. Meanwhile, he said Malaysia has finalised its Third Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement, underscoring the nation’s firm commitment to accelerate its low-carbon transition. “Together, these initiatives show that Malaysia’s green transition is structured, strategic, and sustained.” “It is a long-term national mission built on strong policy, clear law, and enduring economic opportunity,” he said. – Bernama

Russian strikes halt Ukraine gas production unit in Poltava region

Russian strikes halt Ukraine gas production unit in Poltava region

KYIV : Russian forces struck another gas production facility in eastern Ukraine early Thursday, forcing its closure in another large-scale bombardment to pile pressure on the energy network. Since invading Ukraine in 2022, Moscow has attacked Ukrainian power infrastructure each winter, forcing Kyiv to impose emergency blackouts and import energy from abroad. DTEK, the country’s largest private energy provider, announced on social media that gas production facilities in the Poltava region were shut down due to the attack. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia overnight launched more than 300 attack drones, including some carrying cluster munitions, and 37 missiles. He stated that Russians use every single day this autumn to strike at Ukrainian energy infrastructure. The Ukrainian energy grid operator announced emergency power outages in eight regions after Thursday’s strikes. Media reports earlier suggested around 60% of Ukrainian gas production had been halted in recent Russian strikes. Attacks on power stations have cut hundreds of thousands of people in the country from electricity. The early morning attack also came one day after state-owned energy company Naftogaz said one of its thermal plants was damaged in a Russian attack on the northeastern Kharkiv, Sumy and Chernigiv regions. The Kremlin claims its forces only target military facilities. The International Criminal Court last year issued arrest warrants for two top Russian army officials over the attacks on Ukraine’s energy facilities. The court said these attacks constitute a “war crime” and had inflicted “excessive” harm to civilians. Kyiv has been appealing to its allies for more air defence systems to protect critical infrastructure. Ukraine has also launched retaliatory strikes on Russia’s oil refineries. – AFP

Public urged to report BUDI95 fuel issues to KPDN, not social media

Public urged to report BUDI95 fuel issues to KPDN, not social media

BUTTERWORTH: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living has urged the public to lodge official reports about any alleged pump meter manipulation involving the BUDI MADANI RON95 fuel subsidy initiative rather than spreading claims on social media. Penang KPDN director S. Jegan emphasised this approach is crucial to allow proper investigations and appropriate action if allegations prove true. He confirmed no complaints about BUDI95 have been received since its September 30 implementation except one technical issue resolved as user error. Jegan stressed that issues concerning BUDI95 should be reported directly through KPDN’s official channels instead of going viral online. He explained pump meter manipulation is difficult and the BUDI95 subsidy amount is already fixed. Previous consumer claims about lower fuel fills since BUDI95’s launch had circulated widely on social media. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali recently stated the ministry would take action against any suspicious elements in the targeted subsidy programme. He clarified targeted subsidies for diesel or petrol aim to prevent leakages rather than reduce public subsidies. Close monitoring occurs through a real-time system between KPDN and the Ministry of Finance for direct tracking of petrol station purchasing trends. Malaysians aged 16 and above with valid driving licences automatically qualify for up to 300 litres of RON95 monthly since September 30. Regarding the Festive Season Maximum Price Scheme for Deepavali, Jegan said 173 enforcement officers and 60 price monitoring officers have been mobilised across Penang. These officers operate at strategic locations like public markets and shopping centres to protect consumers from unethical practices during the festive period. Jegan warned action will be taken against traders violating regulations under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011. The scheme runs until October 22 covering nine food items including imported mutton, tomatoes, and various onions. This implementation aims to ensure price stability of consumer goods throughout Deepavali celebrations. The scheme specifically prevents unreasonable price hikes by traders during the festive season. – Bernama
