IOC expresses great concern over Israeli gymnasts’ worlds exclusion

IOC expresses great concern over Israeli gymnasts’ worlds exclusion

THE International Olympic Committee has expressed great concern over Indonesia’s refusal to issue visas for Israeli athletes at the upcoming gymnastics World Championships. Indonesian authorities denied Israeli gymnasts entry visas last week for the championships starting on Sunday. The Israeli Gymnastics Federation appealed this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, demanding either athlete participation guarantees or event relocation or cancellation. CAS rejected the appeal, meaning Israeli athletes will not compete in the October 19-23 championships in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country. The IOC stated it would discuss Indonesia’s specific situation at its next Executive Board meeting. “The IOC’s principled position is very clear: all eligible athletes, teams and sports officials must be able to participate in international sports competitions and events without any form of discrimination from the host country,“ the IOC said. “It is therefore the direct responsibility of the host country, the organiser and the sports organisations directly concerned to make sure that this principle is fully respected,“ it added. “Sport must remain a safe space for athletes to fulfil their dreams; and athletes must not be held responsible for political decisions.” Indonesia’s government cited support for Palestinians as the reason for denying Israeli gymnasts entry. Israel has been at war with Palestinian armed group Hamas in Gaza for more than two years. Gaza’s health ministry reports more than 67,900 people killed in the territory, with United Nations verification of these figures. Israel launched the war following Hamas’s 2023 attack that killed 1,221 people, mostly civilians, according to AFP’s tally based on official Israeli data. Indonesia withdrew from hosting the Association of National Olympic Committees World Beach Games in July 2023 amid controversy over Israel’s participation. The country also lost hosting rights for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in March 2023 after two governors objected to Israel’s participation. Both previous incidents occurred before the current Gaza war began. – AFP

Teen Nakai leads favourite Sakamoto at Grand Prix de France

JAPANESE teenager Ami Nakai delivered a stunning performance on day one of the season-opening ISU Grand Prix de France on Friday. The 17-year-old pushed teammate and big favourite Kaori Sakamoto into second place after the women’s short programme. Nakai, competing in her first senior season, landed a triple Axel and triple Lutz-triple toe combination flawlessly to Nino Rota’s La Strada. She earned a personal best 78.00 points for her Italian-themed performance ahead of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. “Having moved up from juniors to seniors, I was looking forward to skating with many great skaters on this very big stage,“ said Nakai. “I was not surprised with how I did, but when my score came up I was so happy that I jumped up.” She leads Sakamoto by 1.8 points heading into Saturday’s free skate. Sakamoto, a three-time world champion undefeated on the Grand Prix circuit for two seasons, scored 76.20 points. The 2022 Olympic bronze medallist performed to ‘Time To Say Goodbye’ by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli. “Six years ago, my experience at the Grand Prix in France was a bitter one,“ said Sakamoto, who placed fourth then. “Today coming back I was a bit nervous, tight even. There were times where I came close to making a mistake. Nevertheless, I still got a very high score and I am pretty pleased with it.” American Isabeau Levito took third place with 73.37 points while skating to Sophia Loren’s voice in an elegant red rhinestone outfit. Japan’s Rion Sumiyoshi finished fourth and South Korea’s Kim Chae-yeon fell on a triple flip to place sixth. Japan’s reigning world champions Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara lead the pairs competition after their short programme to the Rolling Stones’ ‘Paint It, Black’. They scored 79.44 points ahead of Canadians Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps, the 2024 world champions. The pairs free skating final takes place on Saturday along with the women’s free skate. The French Grand Prix marks the start of the international figure skating season less than four months before the Winter Games. US two-time world champion Ilia Malinin opens his Olympic season in Angers on Saturday. The 20-year-old quadruple-jumping specialist is favourite to follow retired fellow American Nathan Chen onto the top of the Olympic men’s podium. Malinin faces home hope Adam Siao Him Fa, a three-time winner in Angers and former world medallist. Reigning Olympic ice dance champion Guillaume Cizeron, now partnered with Canadian Laurence Fournier Beaudry, will also compete. Italy’s Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri join Britain’s Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson, the world ice dancing bronze medallists, in the competition. Skaters compete in two of the six-leg series with the top ranked qualifying for the Grand Prix Final in Nagoya, Japan from December 4-7. – AFP

UK government aims to reverse Maccabi Tel Aviv fan ban at Villa match

UK government aims to reverse Maccabi Tel Aviv fan ban at Villa match

THE UK government has pledged to do everything possible to allow all fans to attend the upcoming Europa League match between Aston Villa and Maccabi Tel Aviv. This commitment follows significant anger over a Safety Advisory Group decision to ban the Israeli team’s supporters from the November 6 fixture at Villa Park. A government spokesperson confirmed they are working with police and partners to ensure the game can safely proceed with all fans present. Authorities are exploring what additional resources and support might be required to facilitate attendance by all supporters. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined the criticism of the ban by calling the move wrong on social media platform X. Starmer emphasised that the government will not tolerate antisemitism on British streets and that police must ensure all football fans can enjoy the game without fear. European football governing body UEFA has called on clubs and authorities to agree on measures necessary to allow Maccabi fans to attend. Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar described the decision as shameful and cowardly on social media. A new meeting of the Safety Advisory Group committee is now expected early next week to review the decision. West Midlands police will also outline what additional resources might be needed to manage the match safely. The police force had advised the Safety Advisory Group that they had public safety concerns outside the stadium bowl. Officers classified the fixture as high risk based on current intelligence and previous incidents. This classification references violent clashes and hate crime offences during Maccabi Tel Aviv’s 2024 Europa League match against Ajax in Amsterdam. Last November’s Ajax versus Maccabi Tel Aviv match sparked two days of violent clashes between pro-Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli fans. Supporters of the Israeli team were assaulted in Amsterdam in hit-and-run attacks following various incidents. British-Israeli hostage survivor Emily Damari said the ban would prevent her from watching her supported team Maccabi. Damari stated that football should bring people together irrespective of faith, colour or religion. Maccabi fan Tamir Nahson described the situation as a missed opportunity and expressed disappointment for both sets of fans. Maccabi Tel Aviv chief executive Jack Angelides noted the team has travelled to other countries where sentiment is not kind toward Israeli teams. Angelides emphasised that with proper police presence in those locations, no incidents occurred. Birmingham has been the scene of huge pro-Palestinian rallies since the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas began. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties according to figures from Gaza’s health ministry and Israeli officials. Earlier this month, two Jewish men died in an attack on a synagogue in Manchester that police linked to Islamist extremism. Some left-wing independent and Green politicians in Britain have backed the ban on Maccabi fans. Several politicians have called for the wider exclusion of Israeli teams from international competitions due to government actions in Gaza. – AFP

Postecoglou defiant despite Nottingham Forest’s poor start

Postecoglou defiant despite Nottingham Forest’s poor start

ANGE POSTECOGLOU insists his managerial career always concludes with silverware if given sufficient time as he battles to secure his position at Nottingham Forest. The Australian manager has failed to win any of his first seven matches since taking charge at Forest last month. Forest currently sit 17th in the Premier League standings with just one point separating them from the relegation zone. Postecoglou has already faced supporter demands for his dismissal but maintains backing from the club’s leadership. The former Celtic and Tottenham manager remains confident his Forest tenure will mirror previous successes despite mounting pressure. “All I’ve heard since I’ve finished at Tottenham is that we finished 17th last year,“ said Postecoglou. “So if you look at it from that prism of we finished 17th then, yeah, I’m a failed manager who’s lucky to get another opportunity.” “But maybe I’m a manager that if you give them time, the story always ends the same.” “At all my previous clubs it ends the same -- with me and a trophy.” Postecoglou won the Europa League with Tottenham during his second season before being dismissed due to poor league performance. He acknowledged the challenges of implementing his preferred playing style at his new club. “I am trying to change the way we play.” “The players are adapting, but there’s inconsistency in there.” “The flip side of that is that I’m still really excited about the opportunity here.” “I’ve got a group of young players who are willing to change, which is the first thing, and I’m heading down that road.” Forest face Chelsea this weekend as Postecoglou seeks his first victory since replacing Nuno Espirito Santo. The two-time European champions finished seventh last season under their previous manager. – AFP
