Pauline Ferrand-Prevot wins women’s Tour de France in historic solo victory

FRENCH cyclist Pauline Ferrand-Prevot secured a historic victory in the women’s Tour de France, crossing the finish line alone in the ninth and final stage through the Alps. The 33-year-old Visma rider, who returned to road racing last year, claimed the overall title with a commanding lead of 3 minutes and 42 seconds over Dutch competitor Demi Vollering. Ferrand-Prevot’s triumph marks the first time a French rider has won the modern edition of the women’s Tour de France, now in its fourth iteration. She becomes the first home champion since Jeannie Longo in 1989, when the race was known as the Tour de France Feminin. “I came back on the road after my Olympic title, and I said I will try to win the Tour de France in the next three years,“ said Ferrand-Prevot. “So here I am, the first one! It was an amazing season with my team.” The Olympic mountain bike champion, who also won Paris-Roubaix earlier this season, dominated the final Alpine stage near the Swiss border. Poland’s Katarzyna Niewiadoma, last year’s winner, finished third overall, trailing by 4 minutes and 9 seconds. A stolen pickup truck used in the escape was later recovered, but Brown remains at large. Authorities last spotted him during a brief chase two hours after the shooting. Investigators released a photo of Brown barefoot and clad only in black underpants, descending concrete steps with visible scrapes on his body. Knudsen confirmed the image was taken after Brown discarded clothing and belongings near the crime scene. The manhunt involves 250 officers and focuses on mountainous terrain west of Anaconda. “We are acting under the assumption that he is alive, well armed, and extremely dangerous,“ Knudsen stated. LONDON : People smugglers who advertise their services on social media to migrants attempting illegal entry into Britain could face up to five years in prison under new government plans. The move comes as Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour government faces mounting pressure to reduce illegal migration, with over 25,000 people crossing the English Channel in small boats this year alone. Analysis by the UK Interior Ministry revealed that nearly 80% of migrants arriving via small boats used social media to contact smugglers during their journey. The new offence, to be added to existing immigration legislation, targets individuals who post online ads promoting services that facilitate breaches of immigration law. Offenders could face heavy fines and prison sentences. While facilitating illegal immigration is already a crime, the government stated that the updated law will provide law enforcement with stronger tools to dismantle smuggling networks.
