Texas court upholds voter ID law for mail-in ballots amid political tensions

WASHINGTON : A federal appeals court has upheld a Texas law requiring voters to provide identification numbers for mail-in ballots, a decision former President Donald Trump praised as a model for nationwide adoption. The ruling intensifies political clashes in Texas, where Republicans are pushing to redraw congressional districts ahead of the 2026 midterms. The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously supported the provision under SB1, a 2021 election law, stating the ID requirement helps verify voter eligibility. Judge James Ho, appointed by Trump, wrote that the rule ensures mail-in voters “are indeed who they claim to be.” The decision reverses a 2023 block by US District Judge Xavier Rodriguez, who argued ID numbers were unnecessary for determining voter eligibility. Texas Republicans celebrated the ruling, while Democrats and civil rights groups warn it could disenfranchise voters over minor errors. Trump hailed the verdict on Truth Social, calling it “GREAT NEWS” and suggesting it should apply nationwide. Meanwhile, Texas Democrats face escalating penalties, including fines and arrest warrants, after fleeing the state to block redistricting efforts. - AFP

Beijing ends rain alert after evacuating 82,000 amid flood risks

MIYUN, CHINA : Authorities in Beijing lifted a severe weather alert on Tuesday but urged residents to remain cautious as flood risks persist. The red rainstorm warning, issued on Monday, was withdrawn after the weather system weakened, though isolated downpours are still expected in outlying areas. State news agency Xinhua reported that over 82,000 people were evacuated by Monday evening due to flooding threats. The hardest-hit areas included Miyun, Fangshan, Mentougou, and Huairou, where officials warned of potential landslides and further disasters. In Mentougou, displaced residents, mostly elderly, were seen resting in temporary shelters set up in local education centres. Meanwhile, Huairou relocated more than 1,000 people to a military training school. Miyun, where dozens died in last week’s floods, showed signs of recovery as floodwaters receded, leaving behind debris like tree branches and damaged vehicles. Workers in safety gear cleared wreckage while excavators removed boulders blocking roads. Last week’s floods claimed at least 44 lives, with nine still missing, prompting rare admissions from officials about gaps in disaster preparedness. The municipal government emphasised restoring normalcy in affected areas, while authorities warned against spreading rumours exaggerating the crisis. China continues to battle extreme weather, with Hong Kong also facing severe flooding after repeated rainstorm warnings. As the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitter, China faces growing climate challenges but remains committed to carbon neutrality by 2060. - AFP

Malaysia considers law changes to tackle online drug sales

KAJANG : The government is reviewing potential amendments to existing laws or the introduction of new legislation to combat the growing issue of online drug sales. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail highlighted the urgency of addressing this trend, which has become increasingly difficult to monitor due to discreet transactions and courier-based deliveries. The matter was discussed during a Cabinet Committee Meeting on Combating Drug Abuse in June, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. “We examined the need for legal updates, including drafting new laws specifically targeting small-scale online drug sales,“ Saifuddin Nasution said during a press conference after closing the National Anti-Drugs Agency’s (AADK) i-DEEN Programme. The minister noted that online drug sales pose a unique challenge as they involve multiple regulatory bodies. While the Home Ministry oversees drug-related offences, online transactions fall under the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living. “Platforms like e-commerce sites are easier to regulate, but social media sales combined with courier deliveries make detection harder,“ he explained. Saifuddin Nasution also stressed the need for AADK officers to adapt to evolving drug trends, particularly the shift from conventional to synthetic drugs. “Forty years ago, synthetic drugs were unheard of. Now, they dominate among users, requiring updated rehabilitation methods,“ he said. Officers must now handle varying addiction cases with tailored approaches, considering factors like symptoms, severity, and user backgrounds. - Bernama

Orang Asli women master Royal Pahang weaving heritage

Orang Asli women master Royal Pahang weaving heritage

LIPIS : Noor Seshida Hamid never imagined she would master the intricate art of Royal Pahang Weave (Tenun Pahang Diraja), a craft steeped in heritage. For the 29-year-old Orang Asli woman from the Semai ethnic group, this achievement was unexpected, given her initial lack of interest in the textile art. She nearly gave up during her training at Institut Kemahiran Tenun Pahang Diraja Tengku Ampuan Besar Meriam in Pekan, Pahang, finding the process too complex. However, with determination and support from her family and instructors, she succeeded. Today, she is among the weavers representing the Orang Asli community, helping preserve this state heritage. “I didn’t know anything about weaving. But when my mother told me to learn, I just followed. When I saw the intricacy and beauty of the woven fabric, I started to open my heart to learning and appreciating it,“ she said during the ‘Geopark Odyssey: Heritage and Archaeo Tourism Programme’ by Tourism Malaysia Eastern Region. Specialising in kain samping (a cloth worn over baju Melayu trousers), Noor Seshida now completes two pieces monthly, depending on pattern complexity and order volume. “The main challenge is when the thread breaks often or there’s a mistake in the pattern. If that happens, I have to undo it and fix it,“ she shared, expressing hope to deepen her weaving knowledge. Her fellow villager Naera Bah Du, 31, also overcame doubts during training. “When many others quit, I also thought about quitting. But I reminded myself that we were the first group of Orang Asli from our village to learn this art. I wanted to prove that we can do it too,“ she said. Naera highlighted the precision required in connecting threads, a seemingly simple task demanding patience. Both women now work full-time at the Tenun Pahang Diraja Centre in Pos Betau, established in 2023 under Cheminahsayang, a company founded by Tengku Ampuan Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah. The centre empowers rural communities, particularly the Orang Asli, through weaving. Supervisor Nurhasanah Norrahani, 34, explained its dual role as a production hub and educational space. “Many think our products are just sarongs or ordinary handicrafts. We demonstrate the entire process, from thread to fabric, helping visitors appreciate this heritage,“ she said. - Bernama

Tiada sebarang persetujuan bangunkan bersama Laut Sulawesi
