Lebanon cabinet to discuss Hezbollah disarmament amid US pressure

Lebanon cabinet to discuss Hezbollah disarmament amid US pressure

BEIRUT : Lebanon’s cabinet will reconvene on Thursday to address the contentious issue of disarming Hezbollah. The Iran-backed group has already dismissed the government’s decision to strip it of weapons. US envoy Tom Barrack has visited Beirut multiple times recently, presenting a disarmament proposal with a set timeline. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam stated the army has been tasked with a plan to limit weapons to state forces by late 2025. This marks the first such move since Lebanon’s civil war ended over 30 years ago. The government links the disarmament effort to a November ceasefire aimed at halting hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. Last year’s two-month war significantly weakened Hezbollah both militarily and politically. Hezbollah rejected the disarmament decision, calling it “non-existent” and accusing the cabinet of undermining Lebanon’s sovereignty. The group warned the move would allow Israel to interfere with Lebanon’s security and future. Amal, Hezbollah’s ally led by parliament speaker Nabih Berri, also criticised the decision. Iran, Hezbollah’s main supporter, said disarmament is solely the group’s decision. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated Iran does not interfere in Hezbollah’s choices. Two Hezbollah-affiliated ministers walked out of Tuesday’s meeting in protest. Hezbollah framed the boycott as opposition to Lebanon’s submission to US and Israeli influence. Pro-Hezbollah media suggested the group may withdraw ministers or push for a no-confidence vote. Israel has warned it will escalate military action if Lebanon fails to disarm Hezbollah. Recent Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed two people, according to health officials. – AFP

Thailand and Cambodia extend ceasefire amid border tensions

Thailand and Cambodia extend ceasefire amid border tensions

KUALA LUMPUR : Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to extend a fragile ceasefire following recent deadly border clashes. The conflict, which erupted last month over disputed temple territories, left at least 43 dead before a truce was brokered. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as ASEAN chair, facilitated the ceasefire with backing from US and Chinese mediators. The agreement mandates a halt to all hostilities, including attacks on civilians and military targets. “Both sides agree to a ceasefire involving all types of weapons, including attacks on civilians and civilian objects and military objectives of either side, in all cases and all areas,“ the joint statement read. The deal also prohibits any violations under any circumstances. Initial breaches were reported, but clashes subsided as both sides adhered to the truce. Thai and Cambodian defence officials signed the extension, freezing troop movements and patrols along the 800-kilometre border. Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Seiha emphasised the need to prevent further bloodshed. “We are here for a detailed ceasefire arrangement to stop bloodshed and the suffering by soldiers and civilians of both sides,“ he said. The agreement includes plans for another meeting within a month and a commitment to combat misinformation. Both nations pledged to “refrain from disseminating false information or fake news in order to de-escalate tensions.” Thai Deputy Defence Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit stressed cooperation as key to progress. “In order for our discussions today to result in concrete outcomes, both sides needed to show cooperation and sincerity,“ he said. The border dispute stems from unclear colonial-era demarcations by French administrators in 1907. Recent clashes displaced over 300,000 people, marking the deadliest violence in the region in a decade. – AFP

Electric air taxis in Japan by 2027 with ANA and Joby Aviation

Electric air taxis in Japan by 2027 with ANA and Joby Aviation

TOKYO : Airline ANA announced plans to introduce electric air taxis in Japan as early as 2027. The initiative is a collaboration with US-based Joby Aviation. The joint venture aims to deploy over 100 five-seater aircraft for urban mobility. ANA President Koji Shibata called the project a revolution in air travel. Each aircraft will carry a pilot and four passengers at speeds up to 200 mph. The service could drastically reduce travel time between Tokyo and Narita. Currently, the journey by car or train takes about an hour. The air taxi could shorten it to just 15 minutes. ANA has not yet disclosed pricing but aims to make the service affordable. A public demonstration is scheduled for October at the Osaka Expo. Joby Aviation CEO JoeBen Bevirt praised Japan as an ideal launchpad for air mobility innovation. The aircraft operates quietly with zero emissions. The project initially focuses on routes between Narita, Haneda, and Tokyo. Future expansion could include additional destinations. Joby’s design allows vertical takeoff like a helicopter before transitioning to forward flight. This reduces noise and environmental impact. The announcement follows setbacks in the industry, including Volocopter’s insolvency filing. The German startup had aimed for a 2025 launch. Volocopter faced delays after failing to secure engine certification in time for Paris Olympics test flights. The market remains competitive despite challenges. – AFP
