ZURICH : Swiss mining and commodities trader Glencore has reported deeper losses for the first half of 2025. The company posted a $655 million loss, compared to $233 million in the same period last year. Core earnings from its mining division dropped 17% to $5.4 billion, driven by weaker coal prices and reduced copper output. India holds interest rates steady amid US tariff threats

India holds interest rates steady amid US tariff threats

MUMBAI : India’s central bank left its key interest rate unchanged at 5.50 percent on Wednesday. The decision comes as US President Donald Trump escalates threats to raise tariffs on Indian imports. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) maintained the repurchase rate following a unanimous vote by its six-member panel. Most analysts had expected a pause after June’s unexpected 50-basis-point cut. RBI governor Sanjay Malhotra stated that global trade challenges persist but India’s economy remains resilient. “We have taken decisive and forward-looking measures to support growth,“ he said in a statement. The RBI had cut rates three times this year, including its first reduction in nearly five years in February. India anticipates above-average monsoon rains, which analysts say could boost agricultural output and rural incomes. However, Trump’s warning of “substantially” higher tariffs on Indian goods has added economic pressure. Existing US tariffs on Indian products were already set to rise from 10 percent to 25 percent this week. Malhotra acknowledged that tariff uncertainties persist despite India’s robust growth outlook. Trump’s move follows his threat of new sanctions on Russia unless progress is made in Ukraine peace talks. Though not a major exporter, India counts the US as its largest trading partner. - AFP

Only states adopting Act 672 receive federal funds for waste management

Only states adopting Act 672 receive federal funds for waste management

KUALA LUMPUR : The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) does not provide special direct allocations to all state governments for solid waste management. Only six states and two Federal Territories that adopted the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672) receive federal funding. Under Budget 2025, RM1.54 billion has been allocated for waste management in Perlis, Kedah, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya. Other states must manage waste independently through their local authorities and agencies. Deputy Minister Aiman Athirah Al-Jundi stated this in response to Mohd Nazri Abu Hassan’s query in the Dewan Rakyat. Act 672 allows the Federal government to take action against illegal dumping in participating regions. SWCorp conducted 3,036 operations against illegal dumpsites in 2024, with 2,030 more up to June this year. KPKT stressed that cleanliness efforts require collaboration among state governments, agencies, and the public. Aiman Athirah highlighted the need for collective commitment to ensure a clean and sustainable environment. – Bernama

91 Kg Togudon residents receive land titles under PANTAS initiative

PENAMPANG : A total of 91 residents of Kampung Togudon received their land titles today under the Native Customary Land Service Programme of Sabah (PANTAS). Penampang MP Datuk Ewon Benedick, who is also Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister, said the titles cover 157.37 hectares. The distribution marks the first phase of the initiative, with 982 hectares surveyed under PANTAS. Ewon acknowledged the long wait faced by Kg Togudon residents for land ownership. He made the issue a priority after being elected as Penampang MP. Approval from Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor allowed the land survey to begin in August last year. The Phase 1 handover ceremony was held in the village today. Ewon said this milestone ends years of uncertainty for villagers regarding land ownership. He believes it will boost economic activities, especially in agriculture and rural tourism. Kg Togudon is the first village in Penampang to undergo the PANTAS survey. The programme was initiated after Ewon became the area’s elected representative. He pledged to expand PANTAS to other villages, including Kg Moyog, Kg Rugading, and Kg Kibunut. Ewon raised the need for PANTAS to continue under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) 2026-2030. The programme has been included in the 13MP under the special Bumiputera development agenda for Sabah and Sarawak. He will seek the Chief Minister’s support to extend PANTAS in Penampang and Kadamaian. Most funding for the initiative comes from the Federal government. – Bernama
