Guyana VP says parliament role offers no immunity to opposition leader

GEORGETOWN : Serving in Guyana’s parliament would not grant immunity to opposition leader and mining businessman Azruddin Mohamed from a United States indictment. Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo confirmed on Thursday that parliamentary status would not protect Mohamed from an indictment issued by a Florida court. Azruddin and his father Nazar Mohamed face United States sanctions and were indicted this month by the Southern District of Florida court on eleven charges. The charges include fraud, money laundering, and bribery related to gold exports from Guyana. Azruddin Mohamed is scheduled to be sworn in as Guyana’s opposition leader by November following his party’s election of sixteen parliamentary members. Guyana’s attorney general stated last week that both men could face extradition to the United States upon formal request. The businessmen would retain the right to challenge any approved extradition request within Guyana’s court system. Azruddin Mohamed informed local media last week that he is assembling a legal team to contest the United States charges. – Reuters

Ops Naga detains 627 foreign vessels, collects RM146 million

KUANTAN : The integrated Ops Naga has resulted in the detention of 627 foreign fishing vessels since its launch in May 2019 up to August this year. This operation has generated 146 million ringgit from forfeitures, fines, and auction proceeds. Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency acting deputy director-general (Operations) Maritime Rear Admiral Mohd Zawawi Abdullah said the achievement reflects the effectiveness of the integrated operation. He stated that the joint efforts of multiple agencies have been crucial in safeguarding the nation’s maritime sovereignty and protecting valuable marine economic resources. “The intrusion of foreign fishing vessels, particularly in the South China Sea, poses a serious threat to national sovereignty and security,” he said in a statement today. Mohd Zawawi added that these intrusions also adversely affect the livelihoods of people who depend on marine resources. “The sea does not have physical boundaries like land, so intrusions are bound to occur,” he noted. He emphasised that strong cooperation and high preparedness among all parties can ensure national waters remain safe and well protected. Meanwhile, Mohd Zawawi expressed satisfaction over the first-ever Tabletop Exercise conducted with the involvement of all departments and agencies. This exercise included operational and support teams to strengthen Ops Naga’s operations. “The implementation of Tabletop Exercise in Op Naga aims to identify constraints and challenges that may arise in real-life field situations,” he explained. He said it also ensures readiness and operational effectiveness, along with preventive and procedural improvement measures. Op Naga involved 17 agencies, comprising operational teams from the MMEA, Marine Police Force, and Royal Malaysia Police Air Wing. Other operational teams include the Fisheries Department and the Customs Department. Support teams include the Royal Malaysian Navy, Royal Malaysian Air Force, and Marine Department. Further support comes from the Immigration Department and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. Also involved are the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living and the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia. Additional participating agencies are the Prisons Department, Sarawak Fisheries Department, and Sabah Fisheries Department. The Sabah Ports and Harbours Department and Sabah Parks complete the list of agencies involved in the operation. – Bernama

Zelenskiy hopes Middle East momentum can help end Ukraine war

Zelenskiy hopes Middle East momentum can help end Ukraine war

UKRAINIAN President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Thursday, on the eve of talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, that momentum in the Middle East peace process would help end his country’s more than 3-1/2-year-old war with Russia. “We have a meeting planned with President Trump tomorrow and we are counting on the impulse to curb terror and war which worked in the Middle East to help end Russia’s war against Ukraine,“ Zelenskiy wrote on the Telegram messaging app. “The language of strength and justice is sure to work with respect to Russia as well.” Zelenskiy did not refer directly to Trump’s agreement, in a telephone conversation on Thursday, to hold new talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. But he said it was clear that “upon hearing of Tomahawks, Moscow is in a hurry to renew dialogue”, a reference to Trump’s suggestion that he might provide Kyiv with those missiles. Zelenskiy said he was meeting with representatives of defence companies, “manufacturers of powerful weapons that can definitely strengthen our defences”, including air defence systems to guard against attacks on energy infrastructure. - Reuters

US Southern Command head Admiral Holsey to step down early

US Southern Command head Admiral Holsey to step down early

WASHINGTON : The admiral who leads U.S. military forces in Latin America will step down at the end of this year, two years ahead of schedule, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Thursday, in a surprise move amid escalating tensions with Venezuela. A source familiar with the matter told Reuters that there had been tension between Admiral Alvin Holsey and Hegseth over operations in the Caribbean and questions about whether he would be fired in the days leading up to the announcement. The top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Jack Reed, called Holsey’s unexpected resignation troubling given mounting fears of a potential U.S. confrontation with Venezuela. “Admiral Holsey’s resignation only deepens my concern that this administration is ignoring the hard-earned lessons of previous U.S. military campaigns and the advice of our most experienced warfighters,“ Reed said in a statement. Hegseth, in a social media post, did not disclose the reason for the departure of Holsey, who is one of two Black four-star officers leading a U.S. combatant command. On X, Holsey said he would retire on December 12, but did not give a reason. “It’s been an honor to serve our nation, the American people and support and defend the Constitution for over 37 years,“ he said. Holsey’s departure comes against the backdrop of a military buildup in the Caribbean that includes U.S.-guided missile destroyers, F-35 fighter jets, a nuclear submarine and around 6,500 troops as President Donald Trump escalates a standoff with the Venezuelan government. U.S. military strikes against suspected drug boats off Venezuela have killed at least 27 people, raising alarms among some legal experts and mostly Democratic lawmakers, who question whether they adhere to the laws of war. The Trump administration argues it is in a war with narcoterrorist groups from Venezuela, making the strikes legitimate. On Wednesday, Trump disclosed that he had authorized the Central Intelligence Agency to conduct covert operations inside Venezuela, adding to speculation in Caracas that the United States is attempting to topple President Nicolas Maduro. Holsey is the latest in a series of flag officers to leave their positions since Hegseth took over the Pentagon. Some firings have been abrupt, including those of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, C.Q. Brown, who was Black, and the top naval officer, Lisa Franchetti, who was the first woman to hold the position. “The Department thanks Admiral Holsey for his decades of service to our country, and we wish him and his family continued success and fulfillment in the years ahead,“ Hegseth said on X. Less than a week ago, the Pentagon announced its counter-narcotics operations in the region would not be led by the Miami-based Southern Command, but by II Marine Expeditionary Force, a unit capable of rapid overseas operations that is based at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. That decision came as a surprise to U.S. military-watchers, since a combatant command like Southern Command would normally lead any high-profile operations. - Reuters
