Taiwan raids Chinese firms over chip industry secrets theft

Taiwan raids Chinese firms over chip industry secrets theft

TAIPEI : Taiwanese investigators have raided 16 Chinese-funded companies suspected of illegally poaching high-tech talent to steal secrets from the island’s semiconductor industry. Taiwan dominates global chip manufacturing, producing over half of the world’s chips and nearly all high-end semiconductors. China is aggressively developing advanced chips for AI systems while facing US export restrictions. Hundreds of officials searched 70 locations and questioned 120 people between July 15 and August 6, according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau. No charges have been filed yet, but the probe is ongoing, said a bureau investigator surnamed Gu, who noted similar investigations occur around 25 to 30 times annually. The Hsinchu District Prosecutors Office stated that illegal mainland-funded firms had been stealing Taiwan’s high-tech secrets through talent poaching. Targeted companies allegedly used “diverse and highly harmful infiltration methods,“ authorities revealed. Among the raided firms were Goertek, a key Apple supplier, and US-listed VNET Group. Taiwan has repeatedly accused China of espionage, while Beijing claims the island as its territory and threatens force to reclaim it. Earlier this year, Taiwan blacklisted Huawei and SMIC, restricting exports of advanced chip technology to China. Local firms must now seek government approval before shipping high-tech products to blacklisted entities like Huawei or SMIC. In March, Taiwan’s Investigation Bureau confirmed probes into SMIC and other Chinese firms over suspected illegal talent recruitment. – AFP

India bans 25 books in Kashmir over secessionism claims

India bans 25 books in Kashmir over secessionism claims

SRINAGAR : Indian authorities in Kashmir have banned 25 books, including a work by Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy, for allegedly promoting secessionism. The government order claims the books spread “false narratives” and mislead Kashmiri youth while glorifying terrorism. This follows earlier actions in February when Islamic literature was seized from homes and bookshops. Kashmir remains a disputed region between India and Pakistan since their independence in 1947. Rebel groups have fought Indian rule since 1989, seeking independence or merger with Pakistan. The ban was issued on Tuesday, coinciding with the sixth anniversary of New Delhi’s direct rule over Kashmir. Separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq condemned the move, calling it a sign of insecurity. “Banning books by scholars will not erase historical facts or Kashmiri memories,“ Farooq said. Kashmir elected its first local government last November, but real power remains with New Delhi. The banned books include Roy’s 2020 essay collection, “Azadi: Freedom, Fascism, Fiction.” Roy is a prominent critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Other banned works include those by constitutional expert A.G. Noorani and scholar Sumantra Bose. Historian Siddiq Wahid argued the ban violates constitutional freedoms of speech. “The banned books rely on evidence and logic—does that not matter anymore?” Wahid asked. – AFP

Dewsbury-Hall aims to prove himself after Everton transfer

KIERNAN Dewsbury-Hall has vowed to “prove a point” after completing his £28 million move to Everton. The midfielder left Chelsea just one year after joining from Leicester in a £30 million deal. Despite winning the Europa Conference League and Club World Cup under Enzo Maresca, Dewsbury-Hall found Premier League minutes hard to come by. The 26-year-old becomes Everton’s fifth summer signing ahead of their move to a new 53,000-seat stadium. “I’m so, so excited to get started,“ Dewsbury-Hall said. “Just sitting here in the stadium, it’s unbelievable.” He added that the move “feels right” and motivates him to succeed. Everton open their season at Leeds on August 18 before hosting Brighton at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium. - AFP
