Three world teams confirmed for Le Tour de Langkawi 2025

KUALA LUMPUR : A total of 22 teams will participate in the 29th edition of the Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) from September 28 to October 5. Three WorldTeams and eight ProTeams are among the confirmed participants, alongside 10 continental teams. The WorldTeams include XDS Astana Team (Kazakhstan), Team Picnic PostNL (Netherlands), and Cofidis (France). National Sports Council (NSC) Deputy Director-General Ariffin Mohd Ghani noted the same number of elite teams as last year. Six of the eight ProTeams competed in this year’s Grand Tours, including Total Energies and Tudor Pro Cycling Team. Ariffin expects fierce competition, particularly in Stages 3 and 5, despite no Genting Highlands climb this year. Stage 7 will be the longest at 214.6 km, while the final stage covers 180 km from Tangkak to KLCC. Full rider rosters are still pending, but the race is set to attract strong interest from cycling fans. LTdL Chief Operating Officer Emir Abdul Jalal remains uncertain if last year’s champion Max Poole will return. Notable riders like Fabio Jakobsen and Alexander Kristoff will compete, boosting the event’s prestige. This year’s route spans 1,257.8 km across all 12 Peninsular Malaysia states. Emir highlighted LTdL’s status as a premier Asian race, with more WT and ProTeam entries than other regional events. The race is organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports through NSC and PKBM.

Thai prosecutors charge 23 in deadly Bangkok skyscraper collapse

BANGKOK : Thai prosecutors have indicted 23 individuals and companies in connection with the deadly collapse of a Bangkok high-rise during an earthquake. The 30-storey building crumbled moments after a 7.7-magnitude quake struck Myanmar on March 28, killing thousands in the neighbouring country. The tower, intended for Thailand’s state audit office, was the only structure in Bangkok to collapse, resulting in 89 fatalities, mostly construction workers. The abrupt collapse triggered a legal investigation into the incident. Thailand’s Office of the Attorney General confirmed the case has been forwarded to a criminal court, with a verdict expected within months. “Investigators agreed to indict 23 individuals and legal entities over professional misconduct and forged documents,“ the office stated. The indictment names 16 individuals and seven firms, including an architectural company and a Chinese construction business. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the allegations. Separately, justice department investigators previously revealed they were examining the quality of construction materials used in the building. Among those charged is Premchai Karnasuta, a prominent Thai tycoon and executive director of Italian-Thai Development (ITD). Premchai, 71, faces up to 10 years in prison and a 200,000 baht ($6,000) fine if convicted. This is not his first legal trouble, as he was previously jailed for poaching protected wildlife in 2021. He was released early in 2023 under a clemency programme for good behaviour. Public filings show Premchai owns nearly 12 percent of ITD shares. He was detained in May pending trial. – AFP

Zambry denies Chinese students taking local university quotas

Zambry denies Chinese students taking local university quotas

GEORGE TOWN : Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir dismissed allegations that Chinese students are displacing locals in public universities. He clarified that the government has not prioritised foreign students over Malaysians in foundation programmes. “We have never compromised on the policies set by the Central University Admission Unit (UPU),” he said. He emphasised that public universities prioritise Malaysian students as their primary beneficiaries. “It is not true that we are denying local students their rights,” he added. Zambry spoke after opening the IEEE International Symposium on the Physical and Failure Analysis of Integrated Circuits (IPFA) 2025 at the Setia Spice Convention Centre. His statement countered claims by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong in Parliament. Wee had suggested that Chinese students secure spots in public universities due to financial advantages. Zambry noted that Malaysia welcomes international students from over 150 countries under its internationalisation policy. “They choose Malaysia because they trust our education system,” he explained. He attributed the shift from Western countries to geopolitical tensions and competition. The minister warned against spreading unfounded allegations that create public anxiety. He urged MPs and others to seek constructive dialogue instead of politicising the issue. “I don’t want to see the creation of polemics that only do harm,” he stressed. - Bernama
