ALOR GAJAH : Kampung Pulau Masjid Tanah will serve as the pilot site in Melaka for a new cemetery management system called Digital Graves. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the initiative aims to improve the management of traditional cemeteries in the state by digitally numbering graves, making it easier for next of kin to locate burial sites. He explained that increasing grave numbers and disappearing markers have made locating family burial sites challenging for many people. “Through the Digital Graves project, all old graves will be digitally numbered, providing clear markers to help future generations visit their deceased relatives more easily,” he said. He told reporters this after opening the Village Adoption Programme of the Religious Affairs Ministers of Brunei Darussalam, the Republic of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Republic of Singapore (MABIMS). Ab Rauf also expressed his appreciation to MABIMS for choosing Kampung Pulau as the pilot location for the MABIMS Village Adoption Programme. “I am confident that this selection will continue to strengthen the regional Islamic cooperation network, as well as make Melaka one of the main driving forces in empowering the well-being of the ummah,” he said. The event was also attended by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Senator Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar and a delegation of religious ministers from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Singapore. – Bernama
KOTA KINABALU : The Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute remains committed to guiding local farmers in modern agricultural techniques to expand shallot cultivation in Sabah. Farmers applying modern cultivation methods with quality seeds and optimised fertiliser and irrigation systems can earn up to 35,000 ringgit per season. MARDI director-general Datuk Dr Mohamad Zabawi Abd Ghani stated the institute is always ready to collaborate with stakeholders to organise courses and practical training for farmers. “This programme aims to encourage farmers to venture into shallot cultivation and help increase their income,“ he said. He explained that just one acre of shallot cultivation can yield five to six tonnes within approximately 90 days. At current market prices, this production can generate up to 35,000 ringgit per season. More than 200 participants attended a shallot cultivation course opened by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup in Sook. Participants were introduced to various onion varieties alongside conventional cultivation methods and fertigation systems. The course was held in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security Mini Carnival Programme. This initiative aims to improve knowledge and technical skills of local farmers to expand shallot cultivation. The expansion aligns with government aspirations to reduce dependence on onion imports. – Bernama
KOTA KINABALU : Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged Bumiputera entrepreneurs, particularly women, to confidently explore international markets with Malaysian branded products. He announced that Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) will launch a Gate to Global programme offering entrepreneurs opportunities to market products abroad under a unified brand. “I have requested the MARA chairman to promote these products under a single brand,“ he said during the MARA Women’s Empowerment Programme and Malaysia MADANI Nationhood Seminar. Ahmad Zahid explained that products should be manufactured on an original equipment manufacturer basis with one recognised Malaysian brand. He emphasised this approach would strengthen Sabah’s economic position when global markets recognise products originating from the state. The government has allocated 52 billion ringgit for entrepreneurship sector empowerment next year with participation from 17 ministries. MARA will receive 4 billion ringgit under Budget 2026 to support these entrepreneurial initiatives. Ahmad Zahid highlighted women entrepreneurs’ proven discipline in business management and loan repayment. “Women can be trusted more than men in loan repayment with Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia recording only 0.25% non-performing loans from women,“ he stated. He reiterated that Bumiputera entrepreneurs must transition from grant dependency to loans with continuous guidance for sustainable business growth. The government targets upgrading at least 5% of micro entrepreneurs to small category annually. Another 5% of small entrepreneurs should advance to medium level and eventually list on Bursa Malaysia. Ahmad Zahid encouraged focus on high-value sectors including global halal products projected to reach 5 trillion US dollars by 2030. – Bernama
