Nio shares rebound after GIC lawsuit over alleged revenue inflation

SINGAPORE: Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio Inc saw its shares rebound on Friday following sharp declines triggered by a lawsuit from Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC. The lawsuit filed in New York’s Southern District accuses Nio of issuing misleading statements that artificially inflated its securities value. GIC claims these alleged actions caused the fund to suffer significant financial losses. Nio’s stock rose 2.86% in Singapore and 2.48% in Hong Kong during Friday afternoon trading. This recovery followed Thursday’s steep declines of 9.8% in Singapore and 13% in Hong Kong after media reports revealed the August-filed lawsuit. The legal action could potentially impact Nio’s future fundraising efforts according to market observers. Nio has firmly denied all allegations linking them to false claims from a 2022 Grizzly Research short-selling report. The company did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for additional comments. Nio recently secured 1.2 billion dollars through a share sale last month while trailing Chinese competitors BYD and Geely. The electric vehicle designer and manufacturer went public in the United States in 2018 with additional listings in Hong Kong and Singapore. Morningstar Research noted the allegations could damage Nio’s corporate governance reputation without materially affecting operations. The research firm expects vehicle sales growth and profitability improvements to support near-term share prices. – AFP

PBAPP wins gold award for zero waste water recycling project at MIWC 2025

PBAPP wins gold award for zero waste water recycling project at MIWC 2025

GEORGE TOWN : The Penang Water Supply Corporation and PBA Holdings Bhd have won the Gold Award at the Malaysian International Water Convention 2025 for an innovative project at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant. PBAPP chief executive officer Datuk K. Pathmanathan stated the project earned the award in the Circular Economy & Water Reuse category at Wednesday’s ceremony. He explained the Zero Waste Recycling Project provides an innovative solution for handling water treatment residue, classified as scheduled waste since 2009. “In Penang, PBAPP has opted for a more environmentally friendly, cost-effective and sustainable recycling solution, processing and repurposing WTR as a raw material for the production of cement bricks,” he said in a statement. The circular process operates continuously, producing an average of 25.4 million litres per day of recycled water at Sungai Dua in September. Solids classified as SW204 are transported from the water treatment plant to a factory in Bukit Minyak for cement brick production containing 30% recycled material. Pathmanathan emphasised the project ensures water treatment residue is recycled into valuable green building material instead of being sent to landfill. The recycling solution proves cost-effective with Penang’s water treatment residue recycling cost being 74% lower than projected transport costs to Selangor landfills. PBAPP incurred no capital expenditure for the project as the Sungai Dua Dewatering Plant and cement factory were outsourced. The project promotes sustainability in water supply operations by creating a new recycled water resource for water-stressed Penang. The Sungai Dua Dewatering Plant was built to process approximately 91,250 tonnes of water treatment residue in 2025, with increasing capacity planned for subsequent years. This Penang initiative effectively recycles scheduled waste for safe use in full compliance with the Environmental Quality Act 1974. – Bernama

Melaka spent over RM600,000 repairing 39 houses since January

MELAKA : The state government has spent RM641,450 to repair 39 houses across Melaka since January 1 this year. State Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee senior chairman Datuk Rais Yasin confirmed the expenditure through the Melaka Housing Board. He stated that all repaired houses are spread across 13 state constituencies including Kelebang. Rais explained that the cost of repairing each house depends entirely on the extent of damage sustained. “For example, the two houses repaired in the Kelebang constituency, which were handed over today, involved an allocation of RM40,000,” he told reporters at Kampung Pinang. He spoke after the Melaka Rumahku (Repair) Programme organised by LPM alongside the Kelebang constituency ‘Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat’ programme. The event was also attended by Kelebang assemblyman Datuk Lim Ban Hong. Rais noted that most repaired homes were dilapidated or old structures. He identified the roof as the most commonly damaged part, making these houses unsafe for inhabitants. The Melaka Rumahku (Repair) Programme operates under the Melaka Housing Board. A separate allocation of RM1.3 million has been spent on constructing various categories of new homes for state residents. Programme recipient Poniah Ahmad expressed gratitude for receiving a more comfortable home. The 75-year-old said her house roof had been damaged and leaking for the past three years. She described having trouble sleeping whenever it rained or during strong winds. Poniah revealed that her house is more than 50 years old. Her seven children could not afford repair costs due to financial constraints. “In this house, I live with my two grandchildren and four children, including one who is a single mother, whom I depend on,” she said. She thanked the Kelebang assemblyman and state government for helping repair her damaged roof through LPM. – Bernama
